Privacy Policy
Last updated: 28 May 2026
1. Introduction
Servo Scout ("we", "us", "our") operates the Servo Scout mobile application and website at servoscout.com.au. Servo Scout is a real-time fuel price comparison service built for Perth, Western Australia.
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, hold, use, and disclose your personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) contained in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). By using Servo Scout, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy.
2. Information We Collect
We may collect the following types of personal information:
- Account information - your email address (provided directly, or supplied by Google or Apple if you use social sign-in) and a username (chosen by you, or generated for you when you use social sign-in). We do not collect your phone number, date of birth, address, or any government-issued identifiers.
- Social sign-in data - if you choose to sign in with Google or Apple, we receive a unique identifier for your account with that provider, your email address, and (where available) your name. We use this only to create or link your Servo Scout account. We never receive your Google or Apple password. If you use Sign in with Apple and select Apple's "Hide My Email" option, we only ever see Apple's anonymised private-relay address, not your real email.
- Approximate location - GPS coordinates used during your current session to identify nearby fuel stations (and, if you add a home-screen widget, cached locally on your device to refresh it - see Location Data below). This data is not stored on our servers unless you provide explicit consent.
- Fuel price submissions - prices you submit, including the station, fuel type, price, and the time of submission. These are attributed to your username.
- Favourite stations - the stations you save as favourites, to display them in your personalised list. This is a list of station IDs linked to your account.
- Moderation reports - if you flag a submitted price as incorrect, we store the reason text you provide alongside your account ID to review abuse and maintain data quality. Please do not include personal information of third parties in these reports.
- Reputation activity - an internal log of actions that affect your community reputation score (submissions, flags, upvotes, etc.), linked to your account.
- Brand icon submissions - if you submit a station brand icon through the app, we store the image file, filename, content type, file size, and a link to your account for moderation purposes.
- Waitlist sign-ups - if you joined our pre-launch waitlist from our website, we retained your email address and the platform you selected (iOS or Android). This data is used solely to notify you when the app is available and is not used for marketing beyond that single launch notification.
- Feedback submissions - any message, chosen category, app version, platform, and optional contact email you provide through the in-app feedback form. To prevent spam we also store a one-way cryptographic hash of your IP address (never the IP itself) - the hash lets us detect repeat submissions from the same device without ever recording who or where you are.
- Device information - device type, operating system, and app version. For each active session we also store a short device label (for example "ios / ServoScout 1.1.0") against your login record to help you identify your sessions if you ever need to sign out remotely.
- Advertising identifiers - if you use the free version of the app, Google AdMob may access a device or advertising identifier to serve and measure ads. On iOS, access to Apple's advertising identifier (IDFA) requires your consent via the App Tracking Transparency prompt; if you decline, ads are still shown but without the IDFA. Servo Scout Pro subscribers see no ads.
- App usage - we record aggregate, non-identifying counts of how in-app announcements are interacted with (for example taps and dismissals), and, if you have an account, a timestamp of the days you use the app stored against your account. We use this only to understand engagement and improve the app. It is first-party, is never used for advertising, and is never sold.
3. How We Collect Information
We collect personal information in two ways:
- Directly from you - when you create an account, submit a fuel price, update your profile, or contact us.
- Automatically - when you use the app, we may automatically collect device type and operating system version.
- From third-party identity providers - if you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive the account details described above directly from that provider at the time you authenticate.
We will not collect personal information by unlawful or unfair means. Where it is reasonable and practicable to do so, we collect personal information directly from you.
4. Why We Collect It
We collect your personal information for the following purposes:
- Service provision - to operate the app, display fuel prices, and show nearby stations based on your location.
- Nearby stations - to determine which fuel stations are closest to you during your current session.
- Price attribution - to attribute crowdsourced price submissions to your account, supporting our community moderation and reputation system.
- Account management - to manage your account, authenticate your identity, and communicate with you about your account.
- Marketing communications (opt-in only) - if you tick the "Email me product updates" toggle in the app's Settings, your email address is used to send occasional product updates, new feature announcements, and offers. This is strictly opt-in (off by default) and you can disable it at any time in Settings or via the unsubscribe link in any email.
We will only collect personal information that is reasonably necessary for, or directly related to, one or more of our functions or activities.
5. How We Use Your Information
We use your personal information to:
- Provide the service - display real-time fuel prices, find nearby stations, and process your price submissions.
- Improve the app - improve performance, fix issues, and develop new features.
- Communicate with you - send account-related emails, important service updates, and (if you have opted in via Settings) occasional product update or marketing emails. Marketing emails always include an unsubscribe link.
- Enforce our terms - detect and prevent fraudulent price submissions, enforce our Terms of Service, and maintain the integrity of community-contributed data.
We will not use your personal information for a purpose other than the purpose for which it was collected, unless you have consented or the secondary purpose is related to the primary purpose and you would reasonably expect us to use the information for that secondary purpose.
6. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services that may process your personal information:
- Mapbox (United States) - provides map tiles and geocoding. When you use the map, your approximate location and device information may be transmitted to Mapbox servers in the United States. See Mapbox Privacy Policy.
- Stripe (United States) - processes payments for Servo Scout Pro subscriptions. Payment card details are handled entirely by Stripe and are never stored on our servers. See Stripe Privacy Policy.
- Resend (United States) - delivers transactional emails such as welcome messages and password-reset codes. Your email address is transmitted to Resend to send these messages. See Resend Privacy Policy.
- Meta (Facebook) Pixel (United States) - used on our website only (not in the mobile app) to measure the effectiveness of our advertising. Your IP address, browser information, and page-visit events may be transmitted to Meta. See Meta Privacy Policy.
- Google Sign-In (United States) - if you choose to sign in with Google, Google authenticates you and provides us with your Google account identifier, email address, and name. We never receive your Google password. See Google Privacy Policy.
- Sign in with Apple (United States) - if you choose to sign in with Apple, Apple authenticates you and provides us with your Apple account identifier and, where you permit it, your email and name. If you use Apple's "Hide My Email" feature, Apple supplies an anonymised private-relay address that forwards email to you without revealing your real address. We never receive your Apple password. We store an Apple-issued token solely so we can revoke this connection on your behalf if you delete your account. See Apple Privacy Policy.
- Google AdMob (United States) - serves ads to free-tier users. AdMob may collect a device or advertising identifier, approximate (IP-derived) location, and ad-interaction data to deliver and measure ads and to prevent fraud. See how Google uses data.
Cross-border disclosure (APP 8): By using Servo Scout, you acknowledge that personal information may be disclosed to these overseas recipients located in the United States. We take reasonable steps to ensure that overseas recipients handle your personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles. However, you acknowledge that the overseas recipients may not be subject to privacy obligations equivalent to those under the Privacy Act 1988.
7. Location Data
Servo Scout uses your device's GPS to determine your current location so we can show you nearby fuel stations and sort results by distance. Your location is used for the current session only and is not stored on our servers.
If you add a Servo Scout home-screen widget, your most recent coordinates are cached locally on your device so the widget can refresh nearby prices in the background. These coordinates are sent to our servers only to fetch prices for the widget and are not retained afterwards.
We will not record, retain, or share your location history unless you explicitly opt in to a future feature that requires it. You may revoke location permissions at any time through your device settings, although this may limit the app's functionality.
If location permission is denied, the app will still function - you can manually search for suburbs or browse the map.
8. Cookies and Analytics
Our website (servoscout.com.au) uses minimal essential cookies to maintain session state, and the Meta (Facebook) Pixel to measure the effectiveness of our advertising campaigns. The mobile app does not use browser cookies.
Advertising in the app: the free version displays ads served by Google AdMob (see Third-Party Services above). On iOS we request your permission via Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt before accessing the advertising identifier (IDFA); if you decline, you will still see ads, but they will not use the IDFA. Servo Scout Pro subscribers see no ads. We do not sell your personal information to advertisers.
In-app analytics: within the app we collect a small amount of first-party usage data (see App usage above) to measure engagement and improve features. This data is processed on our own servers, is not shared with any third-party analytics provider, is not used for advertising, and is not used to track you across other apps or websites.
9. Data Storage and Security
Your personal information is stored on servers hosted by Microsoft Azure in Australia. We implement industry-standard security measures, including:
- Encryption of data at rest using AES-256.
- Encryption of data in transit using TLS 1.2 or higher.
- Access controls and authentication for all administrative systems.
- Regular security reviews and dependency updates.
While we take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure, no method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Data Retention
- Account data - retained for as long as your account remains active. If you delete your account, your personal account data (email, username, preferences, favourites, reputation log, and saved login sessions) will be permanently deleted within 30 days.
- Price submissions, moderation reports, and brand icon submissions - retained indefinitely as contributions to the community dataset and moderation audit trail. These are attributed to your username; if your account is deleted, the attribution is removed (the records remain but are no longer linked to you).
- Feedback submissions - retained so we can act on your reports. If your account is deleted, we clear both the link to your account and the contact email you provided (if any) within 30 days; the message body remains but can no longer be traced back to you. The hashed IP address used for spam prevention is never convertible back to the original IP.
- Login sessions (refresh tokens) - automatically expire 30 days after issue and are purged nightly. Signing out immediately revokes the session on our servers.
- Sign in with Apple connection - if you sign in with Apple, we store an Apple-issued token used solely to revoke the connection on your behalf. It is deleted when you delete your account.
- Waitlist sign-ups - retained until the launch notification is sent, then deleted within 30 days.
11. Your Rights
Under the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to:
- Access - request access to the personal information we hold about you.
- Correction - request correction of any personal information that is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant, or misleading.
- Deletion - request deletion of your account and associated personal data.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@servoscout.com.au. We will respond to your request within 30 days. We may need to verify your identity before processing your request.
We will not charge you for making a request or for providing access to your personal information, unless your request is manifestly unfounded or excessive.
12. Notifiable Data Breaches
In the event of a data breach that is likely to result in serious harm to any individual whose personal information is involved, we will:
- Notify the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) as soon as practicable in accordance with Part IIIC of the Privacy Act 1988.
- Notify affected individuals as soon as practicable, including a description of the breach, the types of information involved, and recommended steps to take.
We maintain an internal data breach response plan and regularly review our procedures to ensure compliance with the Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme.
13. Children's Privacy
Servo Scout is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take reasonable steps to delete that information as soon as practicable.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at hello@servoscout.com.au.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make material changes, we will:
- Update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
- Notify users via an in-app notification or email where the changes are significant.
We encourage you to review this page periodically. Your continued use of Servo Scout after changes are published constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
